Join us for two engaging programs featuring Michael Rotondi & Ravi GuneWardena, two artists in Brand Library & Art Center’s current exhibition, ‘It’s About Time’. An Art Talk with Michael Rotondi will be preceded by an Ikebana Demonstration with Ravi GuneWardena. Attendees will have the chance to speak with the artists as well as the exhibition curators, April Grieman & Stacie B. London, in between presentations.

6pm: Ikebana Demonstration with Ravi GuneWardena – GuneWardena is an architect and partner at Escher GuneWardena and has been a practitioner of Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arranging) since 2005. From 2019-22, he was Director of the Sogetsu Ikebana, Los Angeles and expanded the visibility of Ikebana as a contemporary art form by facilitating collaborations with various local artists and organizations. GuneWardena’s Borrowed Landscape, on view in the gallery, was inspired by the history of the gardens surrounding Brand Library & Art Center.

7pm: Art Talk with Michael Rotondi – Rotondi has practiced and taught architecture locally and internationally for over forty years, always operating from his base in Los Angeles. He was a founding Partner of Morphosis (1975-1991), founding Principal of RoTo Architects (1991-present), and a co-founder of SCI-Arc, where he co-created and directed the Graduate Program (1978-1987), was the second Institute Director from 1987-1997, and currently teaches as Distinguished Faculty. On view in the gallery are selected pages from Rotondi’s journal and sketchbooks. According to Rotondi, “Drawing allows me to live and speculate in various timescales and experience life giving form to architecture.”

Attendees also have the option to arrive early for a special tour of ‘It’s About Time’ with artist and co-curator Stacie B. London at 5pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the curatorial process as well as the 17 artists on view and their art practices.

Trash and Transformation: Artists Engaged with Our Disposable Culture

Join us for presentations showing how artists and designers reclaim consumer and industrial waste to create useful, beautiful and intellectually challenging objects. Denise Domergue, Founder and Creative Director of Made Out of What?!, will be joined by artists Cathy Hrenda and Aaron Kramer to shed light on approaches, both locally and globally, to transforming consumer waste into beauty and utility. Prepare to be amazed and inspired!

Summer Music Series: String Harmonies

String Harmonies fuse traditional and modern Armenian and Middle Eastern music. The Trio consists of Andrew Kzirian (oud), Vik Momjian (bass), and Yervand Kalajian (violin).

Friday, July 15, at 7:00pm. Free and open to the public.

Visitors are welcome to bring a chair or blanket and picnic on the lawn. Seats are not provided.

Music Series – Bokyung Byun

Bokyung Byun will perform a program titled Music From America that includes new pieces from young U.S. composers along with major South American composers. She will play music by Celil Refik Kaya, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Jack Frerer, Nicky Sohn, Theo Chandler, Tiffany Cuaresma, Agustin Barrios, Manuel Ponce and Leo Brouwer. Byun won the 2021 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition – the first female guitarist to win the award in 20 years. As part of her winnings, a new CD on Naxos will be issued this spring and she will go on a fifty city tour in the fall. For more information visit her web site https://www.bokyungbyun.com.

The Brand Associates 2022 Music Series will consist of 6 concerts taking place in the Brand Library Recital Hall. The concerts are on Saturday afternoons at 2:00pm throughout the year. The series presents top chamber music groups from Southern California and beyond. The Brand Associates sponsor this Music Series.

Mapping The Sublime

“Mapping The Sublime: Reframing Landscape in the 21st Century” was created by Los Angeles-based artists Lawrence Gipe and Beth Davila Waldman. The artists organized this survey of a diverse group of 19 artists that challenge our culture’s entrenched conceptions regarding the landscape genre. This exhibit critically re-examines the genre as a mediated view of nature and a construction of centuries of aesthetic processing, demarcation, and colonial expansion. The works persuade the viewer to consider the landscape genre anew, with traditional notions of the Sublime reevaluated to reflect contemporary issues of climate change and the Anthropocene. The featured artists have made compelling cases, over decades of practice and passion, for an issue that needs to be faced with ever-growing urgency.

A free, public reception will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, with an artist’s panel discussion moderated by Shana Nys Dambrot.

Exhibiting artists include Luciana Abait, Kim Abeles, Fatemeh Burnes, Linda Connor, Rodney Ewing, Guillermo Galindo / Interventions with Richard Misrach, Lawrence Gipe, Dimitri Kozyrev, Ann Le, Constance Mallinson, Ryan McIntosh, Liz Miller Kovacs, Deborah Oropallo & Andy Rappaport, Kit Radford, Aili Schmeltz, Alex Turner, Beth Davila Waldman, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Amir Zaki.
