Curated by Los Angeles Center of Photography Executive Director Rotem Rozental, Ph.D., this exhibition explores the moments our devices betray us, our recollections fail us and our pictures refuse to bring back the people they once captured. The works on view emerges from the intersection of our haunting pasts, possible futures and our relationships with images, technologies and the systems that ask us to speak for our photographs.

Brand 50 is Coming!

Brand Library & Art Center and the Brand Associates invite you to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our annual exhibition which has become a prominent stage for artists from around the country who have paper as their primary medium. Eighty-nine artworks will be on view, chosen by juror Shannon Currie Holmes, Brand Gallery Exhibitions Supervisor. A separate gallery will examine five decades of Associates’ annual exhibitions through the lens of a selection of artworks purchased by the Associates over the years.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, September 24, from 6–9 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet jurors past and present, members of the Associates, our artists, and sponsors. The event will be well attended, so please consider ridesharing.

Deadline Extended! Brand 50 – Call for Entries

The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center announces its 50th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper celebrating not only the artists chosen this year, but the many who have been featured in the past 50 years. Cash awards total over $4,000 including a Juror’s Award. All accepted artworks will be included in a show at the Brand Gallery and in both printed and online exhibition catalogs.

The Landscape Ahead: A Conversation

On the occasion of Earth Day weekend, LA Weekly arts editor Shana Nys Dambrot will moderate “The Landscape Ahead”, a discussion with artists featured in “Mapping the Sublime: Reframing Landscape in the 21st Century”.

The 6 panelists have made commitments in their art practices to engage with topics like climate change, the exploitative effects of consumer culture and colonialism on the Earth’s delicate ecosystem, and more broadly philosophical notions of the Sublime and the Anthropocene.

Participating Artists: Guillermo Galindo, Lawrence Gipe, Liz Miller Kovacs, Constance Mallinson, Deborah Oropallo and Andy Rappaport

Come for this lively conversation, and stick around to help us celebrate the exhibition at the opening reception from 5-8pm!

Shana Nys Dambrot is an art critic, curator, and author based in Downtown LA. She is the Arts Editor for the LA Weekly, and a contributor to Flaunt, Art & Cake, and Artillery. She studied Art History at Vassar College, writes book and catalog essays, curates and juries exhibitions, is a dedicated Instagram photographer and is the author of the experimental novella Zen Psychosis (2020, Griffith Moon). She speaks at galleries, schools, and cultural institutions nationally, and is a Co-Chair of ArtTable’s SoCal Chapter, is a member of the LA Press Club, and sits on the Board of Art Share-LA the Advisory Council of Building Bridges Art Exchange.
