10 Nov Women Painters West 100 Years Exhibition
Glendale Library, Arts & Culture presents “A Century of California Women Artists” at Brand Library & Art Center, commemorating the heritage, challenges and accomplishments by members of Women Painters West for the last 100 years. The exhibition features 100 new, contemporary works by current Women Painters West members inspired by past member artists, as well as showcasing 25 original paintings by past members, on loan from Southern California museums and private collections.
Women Painters West is the oldest organization of its kind recognizing contemporary women artists and their historical sisters. Since its inception in 1921, many members have achieved great success and acclaim both nationally and internationally, including Mabel Alvarez, Kathryn Woodman Leighton, and Elsie Palmer Payne. Today, Women Painters West is a diverse multi-generational group of 200 women artists that awards scholarships to art students in Southern California, assists community art programs and enriches and enhances members’ professional opportunities.
This historic exhibition will be on view from November 13, 2021 through January 8, 2022 at the stunning Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, California. The free, public opening celebration will be held on Saturday November 13th from 6-9pm. Masks are required.
About Women Painters West
Founded in 1921 in Laguna Beach, Women Painters West is a non-profit membership corporation with educational, benevolent, fraternal, and charitable objectives. Originally created under the name of The Woman’s Art Club of Southern California, the organization saw two name changes before officially becoming Women Painters West in 1983. In recent years, Women Painters West has been composed of some 200 professional women artists working in all mediums committed to the practice of art. Women Painters West includes among its members art instructors in all levels of art education. Many members exhibit individually in galleries, museums, and universities and have been recognized and honored nationally and internationally. Membership is by application and juried selection.
